Jen: "Anything reusable over time will save you money"
I’m Exeter’s nappy lady, it’s my passion and calling in life to help families to use cloth nappies and wipes. Cloth or ‘Real’ nappies are super easy, pretty and are saving families hundreds of pounds and the environment! It’s a no brainer. I’m a passionate Zero Waster too. When I had my first daughter, I couldn’t find much info about washable nappies so I started to dig about on the internet – soon to discover that it was very much ‘Real Nappies for London’ and not much going on down here in Exeter. So I emailed the council and somehow found myself volunteering to help with the Devon Real Nappy Project. As a family we go for unpackaged, loose and local, we use the milk man and love our compost heap. Anything reusable over time will save you money, this is my mantra and it serves me well - whether that’s nappies, sanitary towels, cling film or shopping bags it money in my pocket and lighter load on the planet. Each disposable nappy takes raw materials, chemicals, water, packaging and energy to make, transport and then dispose of. Real nappies are so much easier than you might think, no-one is asking you to hand wash or boil anything! Please come and see for yourself and try for free. I’ve been running Nappuccino for over 10 years, it’s a melting pot of usefulness, I offer nappy hires, trials, trouble shooting and nappy support, other qualified helpers provide Breastfeeding support, bra fitting, Sling library and consultancy and loads more! We host Nappuccino from The Baby Room, a venue we created in 2018 when the children’s centres closed and it’s gone from strength to strength. There is a crammed timetable of baby groups, new parent support and all with a plastic free and locally sourced ethos. We have a refill area with shampoos, conditioners, Washing up Liquid and stock other local suppliers who make beauty products. It’s easy when you know how and you’ll be so glad you made the decision to use cloth, as will your pocket and the planet.

The Exeter Real Nappy Initiative looks after 12 trial kits with the help of the Devon Real Nappy Project, get in touch here to borrow a free kit. You can donate nappies back to ERNI so that kits can be maintained, if we get too many nappies or ones we can’t use, we send them to a Kenyan orphanage.
Zero Waste Nappy Solutions
There are some fabulous UK based companies who use recycled materials in their washable nappies such as Close Parent and Tots Bots. Most nappies use bamboo which is more sustainable than cotton or microfleece, and you would not believe how soft and fluffy it is – perfect for babies bums!
